Downtown Coolsville. Population: Us

Xander fell in love with The Iron Giant about two months ago. The first time he saw it, the three of us sat on the couch and watched it together. Xander was mesmerized the entire time, and he has been in love with robots ever since.

He imagines them everywhere. If there is an electronic device he doesn’t understand and has never seen before, it’s a robot. If we’re driving past some industrial buildings, he see robots. For a few weeks, until he caught on to the correct word, he called his elongated shadow a robot.

I felt he needed something on his walls to reflect his new phase, so I’ve started work on a poster. I’m getting tired so I don’t want to go any farther – I always end up scrapping it the next day if I work too late – but I’m posting the beginning.

I wonder if robots.txt files will be obsolete by the time he is old enough to understand the joke.

Little Jesus, Little Me

There is no household chore I detest more than folding the laundry, but every other day (more or less) I grit my teeth and do it. The other day, Xander was playing quietly in his room while I began folding a load. About halfway through, I felt a tap on my leg. I turned to see Xander holding out a book for me to read.

I told him, “Sorry, Mommy can’t read to you right now; I’m doing the laundry.”

Thankfully, it took me less than a second to realize what I had just done. I left the other half of the clothes and went to his room, where we read the book he had chosen and several others.

I should never be too busy to teach my children, especially about God. It doesn’t matter if the clothes are getting wrinkled, if there’s a mess on the floor, or if the sink is full. Those things can wait, but the education of my child cannot.

Peas?

Xander is an expert at saying please. He says it before I hand him a sippy cup; he says it if he wants to be picked up; he says it over and over again if I’m feeding him his dinner and I don’t get the next bite to him in time.

He knows that Mommy likes it when he’s polite, and he thinks that saying please makes him more likely to get what he wants.

But after he has been lifted up, been given the cup, or taken his bite, Xander is silent. I say, “Say thank you” and he doesn’t comply.

When it comes to my relationship with God, I am a two year old. I’m very good at asking for things, but not very good at thanking Him.

I have so much to be thankful for that were I to attempt to write out a list, this post would be way too long. I’m glad I have Xander in my life to remind me to say thank you to my heavenly father.
