I Should Probably Get On That

I went in for my 36 week prenatal visit today and got some facts about baby Aliza:
-One week until she’s full term.
-Like my other two babies, she is in breech position.
-I am 1cm dilated.
-I now begin seeing my doctor weekly.

This news reminded me of a few facts about the house:
-I have yet to choose, purchase, and train Arya on a toddler bed so Aliza can have the crib.
-The box of Arya’s newborn clothes is somewhere in our stack of unopened moving boxes.
-There is still creepy bunny wallpaper and border in the girls’ room.

But it’s okay, because:
-I have two arms, several slings, and a bassinet. This baby will sleep somewhere.
-Whenever I get around to finding the box, there are plenty of clothes for her to wear.
-She has 2 parents and 2 siblings who can’t wait to meet her.

We really do love Baby #3, even if she doesn’t have a nursery yet!

Parks & Recreation

This morning I had the brilliant idea to tour parks of Paragould and Jonesboro. I must have been slightly insane, because it was also grocery day (every other Tuesday at the Kroger 35 minutes away) and gymnastics day.

So today looked like this:
Wake up, get dressed, breakfast, Labor Park, Reynolds Park, Walcott Park, drive to Jonesboro, Target, Lowe’s, Chick-Fil-A, Craighead Forest Park, Kroger, drive to Paragould, quickly put cold groceries away, gymnastics, make dinner, put kids to bed.

Somehow, even after all the excitement of the day and no nap, Xander was very well-behaved in gymnastics. A few other kids were having trouble following directions, and he didn’t join them but quietly set a good example. I was so proud of him!

My favorite thing about today was taking a step back and letting Xander go at Labor Park. Last summer, though Xander was brave, he wasn’t quite big enough to climb everything there. Today, he mastered everything he tried. It’s scary watching your child climb up so high, but his smile after doing it all on his own is worth the skipped heartbeats.

Arya found a way to keep herself occupied while her acrobat brother played.

Craighead Forest Park is still my favorite. There is so much that Arya can do there without my help, but there are also plenty of things that Xander isn’t able to climb yet. IMG_5825IMG_5829IMG_5853

And there are friendly ducks to feed!

As I watched Xander and Arya cross the bridge today, I realized that next summer there will be another child walking with them. Scary and exciting thought.

We had a great time today, but it feels great to finally be sitting down!

The Guys

I realized I haven’t posted anything about Rob for a while. When he takes the kids, it’s usually to give me a chance to go out and do something for myself, so I can’t photograph it. Sometimes we’re each having one-on-one time with the kids and I don’t want to disturb. To prove that he really is still around, here are some father/son activities from over the weekend.

Come Out to Plaaay

This was the week of playdates.

Sunday afternoon, Xander played with his favorite girls. Yes, they’re doing what it looks like they’re doing. Yes, we let them. No, nobody got hurt.

IMG_5689IMG_5687

On Monday, the weather was nice and the house was clean so I decided to take a day off housework and just play with the kids. A few weeks ago, we met a boy Xander’s age who lives just a few houses down the street. He also has a little sister just a few months younger than Arya. How perfect is that? Their mom and I facebooked each other at the time so I invited them over.

The 4 kids had a great time hanging out in the backyard; the boys were instant buddies… but I purposely didn’t take pictures. I found out after thoroughly stalking getting to know her on facebook that their mom is a professional photographer, and I was too chicken to take out my pathetic camera. Yes, I’m a 12-year-old girl.

The next day, we invited over a boy in Xander’s Sunday School class. He lives in our neighborhood, and the boys always have a good time together. I like having him over because he’s very sweet and always polite.

The boys spent the afternoon offroading…

…and getting soaked. Arya too.

Then a costume change and some more playing, indoors this time. I love that the boys get along so well. They chose a project to build and worked on it together.

The best thing about having friends over isn’t watching your child have fun; it’s getting to talk to another adult! There’s only so much a person can talk about with a 3 year old before going insane.

So if you’re reading this, and you live nearby, and you get a little bored sometimes… come over any time. We’d love to play with you, too!

Spring is Coming

image

The weather we’ve been having lately has been such a great preview of the Spring and Summer that’s in store for us.

I’m looking forward to the day when the warm weather is here to stay. There’s a lot of fun waiting to be had.

A Milestone

Today’s weather was gorgeous, so we went out to enjoy it. But it rained just enough last night that the ground was too wet for the kids to play in the backyard. I’m looking forward to when Spring arrives for good so I can let them run around, but today we just stuck to the front porch.

image

A big box of chalk is a great thing to always have around.

image

While helping Arya drag lines with the chalk, I heard a voice saying, “I drew a cat!” Expecting to see something… abstract… I looked over to where Xander was drawing. And saw this.

image

The picture is taken from my perspective, facing where he was sitting on the ground. Right-to-left and in a mirror image for whatever reason, there is indeed a cat on the front porch.

Another milestone reached. His first word written, C-A-T, with no prompting to do so. Way to go, Xander!

Bragging Rights

I’ve been bragging on Xander a lot lately. I can’t help it. It’s partly because he’s my firstborn so every new stage he hits is completely new for me.

But it’s mostly because any time he learns something new, I think about where he was a year ago and my mind is blown.

Last February I would be up in the middle of the night, crying, wondering what in the world was wrong with Xander. As he got closer to his 3rd birthday, it was becoming impossible to ignore how far behind his peers he was with language and social skills. And I knew I couldn’t continue to do nothing and wait, hoping he’d catch up on his own.

I can’t believe how far he has come in the last year. Any time he looks directly into the camera and smiles is still a very big deal for me, and every time he asks a “why’ question, I want to dance with joy. I actually did dance, and for several minutes, a few weeks ago when he said “because” for the first time.

From the child I couldn’t communicate with to the child that gives me at least one good belly laugh a day. From the child who could only play with toy cars by placing them in precise lines across his room to the child who makes up elaborate stories with action figures and Lego. From Expressive Language Disorder to speech therapy graduate.

So now when Xander does things like this, I can’t help but brag on him. He has come a long, long way in a short, short time.

Reactions

Life around the Schumann household recently got a little more interesting.

Arya was a colicky baby. I tried all the various remedies for colic – gripe water, mylicon, the colic hold, etc. – but none of them worked. By the time a woman at church suggested that I cut dairy from my diet, I was willing to try anything. It worked! It was difficult for me to avoid all milk and cheese, and I could no longer give Arya the weeks and weeks worth of milk I had pumped, but it was worth it to get a little bit of sleep. As she got older, I introduced a little milk at a time until I was sure she could handle it. She now drinks cow’s milk with no problems.

IMG_20110129_140925

At about 4 months old, however, Arya’s skin began to have issues. Her cheeks and her upper back were especially tender, but there were sores all over her body. I tried every home remedy I could find, and a cream from her pediatrician, but nothing worked. Arya’s pediatrician eventually referred us to a dermatologist in Memphis, TN who diagnosed her with eczema and prescribed a regimen of washes, creams, and medication. The creams contain steroids, so I only use them when she has a flare up. It has pretty much been a cycle of one week on the regimen and 3 weeks off.

A little before Arya’s first birthday, we gave her her first peanut butter and jelly sandwich. About an hour after eating it, I noticed her face had gotten a little swollen and she wasn’t in the best of moods. I figured she was just too small to handle the peanut, like she had been with the milk, so I never gave it to her again… until a month ago. At 16 months old and less than 30 minutes after having a single bite of a peanut butter sandwich, Arya had a swollen face, swollen eyelids, and runny eyes. She then proceeded to throw up all evening. That’s when I knew she had a peanut allergy.

We saw her pediatrician again. He agreed with my assessment and referred us to an allergist. In the meantime he prescribed an EpiPen, just in case she reacted again. I went through all of the kids’ snacks and discarded everything containing and contaminated by peanuts.

skintest

Fast forward to yesterday morning at our visit with the allergist. He performed a skin prick test for 14 different things, just to be safe. As he came in and read the results, imagine my surprise when I herd him tell me my daughter was indeed allergic to peanuts… and eggs! He explained both allergies to me, and mentioned that food allergies and eczema often go hand in hand. The doctor said that Arya’s skin troubles are simply her body trying to fight off the exposure to egg protein. It makes perfect sense, and explains why the medicine never could cure her: All this time I was treating reactions when I should have been preventing them. So I went through the fridge pantry yet again, this time on the search for egg protein. Turns out there is a lot that Arya can no longer eat, but the allergist thinks Arya is likely to outgrow the egg allergy by the time she is 5.

The bad news is that now we all have to be very vigilant about what is given to Arya. The thought of having to inject her with the EpiPen and take her to the ER terrifies me. No more cookies, no cupcakes, and definitely no restaurants. I will need new groceries, and I’ll need to experiment with new recipies.

The good news is that we found out about her allergies early, and that the peanut reactions weren’t as severe as they could have been. Not being able to eat out will be good for our budget. I’ve been wanting to move towards cooking 100% from scratch (or as close to it as possible in 21st century America) but get lazy, so this is a perfect motivator to go all the way.

And the best news is that we now have an answer to why Arya has been so uncomfortable for so long, and that we can hopefully help her feel her best all the time.

Valentine’s Day 2012

A week ago, I was thinking about what to do with Xander for Valentine’s Day. I knew he would be having a party with his preschool class the day before Valentine’s, but when I saw that it would consist of a couple cookies, some yogurt, and a valentine exchange, I knew I had to do something else. So I asked a few other moms whose kids weren’t in preschool if their kids would be able to come if I threw a party.

We ended up having a blast today. Total count was 14 kids and 8 moms!

I take a lot of pictures… when my kids are alone and quiet and being peaceful. But when there is a lot going on, like today, pulling out my camera always slips my mind. I didn’t remember to take pictures until about an hour into the party. I really should have taken a picture of the spread of food on the table, but I didn’t think about it so this is the best I have. Just imagine food.

Did I mention that there were kids everywhere?

Because there were kids everywhere.

Xander did his best with letting other kids play with his favorite toys. Then again, he was quite preoccupied with the amount of sweet food available, and the fact that I wasn’t saying no to any of it.

Party is over and Xander spends some quality time with the fondue pot. I spent a little quality time with it myself.

Xander had a good time getting to play with his friends from church, and I had a good time getting to visit with other moms. A happy Valentine’s Day indeed.

Sure, Why Not?

The number one lesson I’ve learned, and the thing I fail at most often, in raising a preschooler is this:

If there’s no good reason to say no, then my answer must be yes.
