Summer Wrap-Up

Summer is almost over, and Fall is right around the corner. This is my favorite time of year: the wind blows a little cooler, the nights are a little darker, the kids are a little older, and change is in the air.

This fall is most definitely going to be a season of change for the Schumanns.

But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Here is a quick recap of the end of our summer:

The Busted Lip Incident.
Xander and I didn’t make it to church that morning, but he was the sharpest looking kid in the ER.

A road trip to Kansas City for the National Worship Leaders Conference. I was an extra set of listening ears and note-taking hands, so Rob could be in two seminars at once.

And lots of cousin and great-grandparent time for the kids.

And two kids who love each other.

It’s been a blast of a summer. Now on to the fall and the changes that will come with it.

Vacation, Day 7

Because of all our illness earlier in the week, we weren’t able to do anything vacationy. Yes, vacationy. I wrote it, you know what it means, and therefore it is a word.

Anyway, Rob wanted to go to the Georgia Aquarium with Xander so we got up early, loaded all our things in the van, and headed downtown. Aunt Becca, Aunt Suzanne, and Uncle Matt followed in another car.

Xander touched a few fish…

…and rode a lot of shoulders.

Some group shots:

We left the aquarium and headed back to Arkansas with a very tired Xander.

Vacation, Day 6

What happens when you put a baby in a turkey roaster?

Cuteness.

(I have to put Xander’s wet hair in a ponytail to keep it out of his eyes. Curls are deceiving; his hair is actually shoulder-length.)

And then it was off to the wedding for us. It reached 95 degrees that afternoon so even though the wedding was at 7pm, it was still sweltering. The wedding was great, though. I have no pictures of the ceremony because they tend to frown on the musicians snapping pictures while playing.

Sound checking and getting music in order:

All dressed up and working on the Bach Prelude in D:

Cute groom’s cake:

Reception. If Rob actually read the blog, he’d be mad at me for posting this:

After the wedding we went back to the house and something that hadn’t happened in a couple of years occurred. 5 Schumann siblings (and 2 spouses) all in the same room! It was a fun (and very late) night.

Vacation, Day 5

We went to the same park as last year’s vacation. It was fun to see the difference in how Xander was able to play.

IMG_2754 copyIMG_2791IMG_2761 copyIMG_2766 copyIMG_2782 copyIMG_2783

Of course, we had to get in the water. Both Xander and Arya enjoyed it.

We visited Great Gramma at her new place.

And then it was off to the wedding rehearsal for us. Here is Rob and the groom, his college roommate.

Vacation, Day 4

or, Attack of the Stomach Virus: Part II

Xander decided to share his illness with his father early Wednesday morning. Rob was very appreciative.

I started out my day with a trip to Kennesaw State University to help out my father’s department with their site. Meanwhile, Rob was bedridden.

IMG_2700

When Rob started feeling better we loaded all our things back in the car and went to visit Rob’s family. Xander was very excited.

Vacation, Day 3

I woke up bright and early to get to the salon by their 7am opening. It was worth it because I had two ladies working on me and they were machines. It took them only 6 hours to take down my old braids and put in the new ones.

IMG_2658

Rob? He slept in and did this.

IMG_2661

Xander was feeling a little (just a little) better so we took him to a park.

We ended the evening by transcribing and working on wedding music.

Vacation, Day 2

or, “Attack of the Stomach Virus”

Xander is excited to see his Uncle Adeolu come out of hiding this morning.

IMG_2606 copy

Rob and Adeolu take the kids to the neighborhood pool party. While preparing to go, Xander throws up on Rob. We think it’s odd, but we give him some water and send him on his way. Meanwhile, I head out with my aunt and uncle to help them do some shopping.

IMG_2607IMG_2609

While at a store, I get a phone call from my brother. Xander threw up again…in the pool. Luckily for the pool party, he was on Rob’s shoulders at the time so all of it landed on his head. Not so great for Rob’s hair. We pick up some Gatorade and head back. 5 minutes after drinking a small cup, Xander pukes his blue Gatorade all over – you guessed it – Rob!

We decide to play it safe and hang out on the screened porch with Xander. No carpets to clean there. Unfortunately, the first of 4 rounds of diarrhea occurs. And that’s all I’ll say about  that.

IMG_2611

My dad fires up the grill. My brother observes.

IMG_2618IMG_2621 copy

Poor Xander takes a nap. Family friends begin arriving for our Memorial Day party, and I don’t hold Arya for the next 6 hours.

IMG_2629 copy

Arya starts getting sleepy so my mom “backs” her. Nigerians have been wearing babies for a few millennia – long before it was trendy!

IMG_2639 copyIMG_2633 copy

Xander wakes up from his nap, drinks a little bit of water, and promptly throws it up. We go to the urgent care.

IMG_2644 copyIMG_2646 copy

We are told he has a stomach virus. An hour later we go home with some Zofran in Xander’s system. So far so good.

A Memorial Day to remember.

Vacation, Day 1

An old roommate of Rob’s is getting married in Atlanta this weekend and Rob and I are playing in the wedding. Instead of making a quick weekend trip, we decided to make a mini vacation out of it. We left Paragould right after church; we were on the road by 12:15pm!

We took one back seat out of the van so we could have more space for luggage and equipment, and each kid had a whole row of the car to themselves.

IMG_2537 copy

As usual, Mom and Dad spent the drive listening to church choir preview CDs.

IMG_2545 copy

Arkansas and Missouri are flat.

IMG_2541 copy

Another Schumann family tradition. This one began the day we moved to Arkansas. Any time we cross the Mississippi, we sing Old Man River. Xander joined in for his first time!

IMG_2554 copy

I packed a cooler and sandwiches, so we only had to stop twice for gas and potty breaks.  We made great time! I seem to have a knack for choosing the restaurant without a changing station in the bathroom. Oh well; our car is cleaner, anyway.

IMG_2556 copy

It’s fun watching the scenery change. A few more trees on I-40.

IMG_2562 copyIMG_2565 copy

This is the face of fatigue. He never did take a nap in the 8-hour trip.

IMG_2567 - Copy copy

I-24 between Nashville and Chattanooga is gorgeous.

IMG_2574 - Copy copyIMG_2582 - Copy copy

We finally get to Georgia and the exit on 75 I called home for 14 years!

IMG_2587 - Copy copy

Xander immediately starts playing with Stephanie, his cousin, whose family is on vacation from Nigeria. Notice my parents’ flags on the garage.

IMG_2593 - Copy copy

Arya gets plenty of cuddles from everyone.

IMG_2602 - Copy

After 15 hours awake, Xander finally went to sleep at 11pm. It took Arya until closer to midnight because she does not like sleeping in a new environment.

And why am I posting so early/late? Because somehow on the drive I developed an extremely upset stomach and a tight back. I had a few hours of restless sleep before waking up in pain. I’m now waiting for my ibuprofen to kick in. Ouch!

Friday, Friday

My favorite day of the week is Friday, Rob’s day off. It’s a good chance to do things as a family because the malls and parks aren’t packed with the weekend crowd. Yesterday we spent the afternoon at Craighead Forest Park. It has one of the best playgrounds I’ve ever seen, and because all the older kids are still in school, Xander was free to explore.

Easter 2011 (Part 3)

We had a wonderful morning celebrating the Resurrection at East Side. The sanctuary was packed, and the worship time was great. Rob lined up three choir specials; they were not easy songs, but everyone nailed it! End of the Beginning, Blessed Redeemer, and Unto the Lamb were incredible.

Our pastor gave a straight-up Gospel presentation as his sermon. I pray that I will never grow tired of hearing it preached, thinking I’m too “advanced” to hear it.

About the airplanes: They were in Xander’s Easter basket so I let him take them with him. They had to stay in the car during church, but they were the only was he was going to sit (somewhat) still during family pictures.

Some pictures…

Heading to church in the morning:

Arya stole her brother’s glasses:

IMG_1772

You call it a sanctuary. Xander calls it a runway.

IMG_1775 IMG_1786

My new favorite picture of him:

IMG_1806

I dress Xander and Arya up every Sunday. Not just a polo shirt, but a button-up and tie. Xander’s tie collection is at 14 now, and Arya is getting quite a collection of dresses. I love putting their Sunday clothes together. Call me old-fashioned, but I want to instill in them that God deserves their very best – that serving Him takes time and effort.

So when it comes to Easter Sunday, I get creative. What most boys wear on Easter is what Xander wears the other 51 weeks of the year. For example, last Easter he wore an agbada (Nigerian suit) because I didn’t want him looking like everyone else. I stumbled upon the perfect dress for Arya back in January and I immediately knew how to match Xander. It took a little time, but I found all the pieces.

IMG_1811
Arya’s dress is from TJ Maxx, and her shoes were a great find at Walmart!
Xander’s shirt is from Old Navy, the jeans are Levi’s 510 Super Skinnies, the shoes are TOMS (“raise IQ, not sea levels”), and the bow tie and suspenders were found on Amazon.com
